The second round of this support program involved the donation of five personal computers installed with the software package called 全hin-yu・(which literally means 素riend of the heart・ to places such as regional welfare equipment display centers. This software package assists those who are not used to using a keyboard, or those who have difficulty in reading the text on a computer screen.
Shin-yu allows the user to enter letters by clicking on an on-screen keyboard using a mouse, thereby eliminating the need for a keyboard. The user can write emails and a diary with this software package. The keyboard, cursors and icons that appear on-screen can be enlarged, and the mouse pointer automatically jumps to the nearest icon when it gets within a certain distance of it. The software has a wide variety of other functions, including reading websites aloud, making it ideal for elderly and disabled people, as well as anyone who is interested in using a computer with the easiest possible controls.
Shin-yu is an easy-to-use tool that improves access to information-related equipment. Unfortunately, however, many of the elderly and disabled people who are in need of such a tool are not aware of its availability. We hope that more and more people will learn of the existence of this product, and that by using it, they will be able to enjoy increased communication with others, whether elderly or young, disabled or able-bodied.
We made this donation to five institutions that have welfare or daycare equipment displays or advice centers nationwide, where we had been unable to fully upgrade our computers for introducing and displaying our accessibility equipment. We gave each institution a computer installed with Shin-yu and a communications tool called ・a href="http://www.hitachi.com/Int-e/skk/welfare/welfare01_01.html">Den-no-Shin・to help meet their local needs. We look forward to seeing these computers being effectively used in future.
