Hitachi Supports China in Fight Against SARS
TOKYO, Japan, 14 May 2003 --- Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501) and Hitachi Medical Corporation (TSE: 6910) today announced they it and affiliated companies are taking to assist the People's Republic of China in combating the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic that has hit that country with singular ferocity.

Hitachi and Hitachi Medical have stepped forward with an offer to provide the Ministry of Health P.R. China with ten Sirius(R) Star Mobile units. The supply of these inverter-type cordless mobile X-ray machines represents a donation of about 70 million yen.

On May 9, in a related move, two companies that supervise Hitachi operations in China, Hitachi China Ltd. and Hitachi (China) Investment Ltd., contributed projection TV sets to the Beijing Ditan Hospital and each of 19 other hospitals caring for SARS patients in Beijing. The twenty donated sets are worth about 4.5 million yen.

"I am deeply sorrowed by the death of many persons from SARS infection and wish to express my sincere condolences to their families and friends. To those who continue to battle the disease, I send my best wishes for a speedy recovery," said Etsuhiko Shoyama President and Director, Hitachi, Ltd. "I also want to salute all of you who are working day and night to bring SARS under control. I hope the day when your devoted work, and that of the numerous organizations engaged in this effort, will soon overcome this scourge and allow people to return to a normal life."
