ID Management of "µ-chip" & its System Integration acquires ISMS Certification
Tokyo, June 2, 2003 --- Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501) today announces that the Information Security Management System (ISMS) of its Mu-Solution Venture Company has been certified by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) as complying with BS 7799-2, and has also received the ISMS certification of the Japan Information Processing Development Corporation (JIPDEC).

Mu-Solution Venture Company, which manages the issuing of IDs for business solutions based on the µ-chip and provides its system integration, had developed, implemented and has operated the ISMS that guarantees the authenticity of ID numbers and ensures the protection of information received from customers and partners, and technical and other internal information.

Mu-Solution Venture Company's Information Security Management System was audited by the certifying body, the Japan Audit and Certification Organization for Information Security (JACO-IS). Following this, on May 23, at a meeting of the certification and registration committee, the company was certified as complying with the ISMS standards of BS 7799-2 and JIPDEC.

JACO-IS is the auditing and certifying body accredited by UKAS and JIPDEC, so the certification acquired by Mu-Solution Venture Company is registered by UKAS and JIPDEC.

The µ-chip, which can be embedded in paper, is one of the world's smallest IC chips, measuring 0.4 mm square. The chip data is recorded in read-only memory during the production process, and therefore cannot be rewritten, thus guaranteeing its authenticity. Applications of the µ-chip include a system for managing the movement of steel materials on sites, and entrance tickets for Expo 2005 Aichi Japan which opens on March 25, 2005.

By demonstrating the soundness of the information security management of Hitachi's Mu-Solutions business, the certification will generate increased trust from customers and partners, leading to a further expansion of the business.
