Hitachi Wins an Order for 107 Moving Sidewalks for Thailand Suvarnbhumi International Airport
TOKYO, Japan, 12 February 2004 --- Hitachi Ltd. (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501) today announced that Siam-Hitachi Elevator Co., Ltd., Hitachi's elevator and escalator sales and manufacturing company for the Southeast Asian region, has won an order for 107 moving sidewalks (brand name: AUTOLINE) for the Suvarnbhumi International Airport, which is being built by the New Bangkok International Airport Company Limited (NBIA). Siam-Hitachi Elevator obtained the order from a construction joint venture formed by Italian-Thai Development Public Co., Ltd., Takenaka Corporation and Obayashi Corporation (ITO-JV) which received the construction contract from NBIA.

Hitachi and Siam-Hitachi Elevator are aiming to make the completion in November 2004. Hitachi will be responsible for manufacturing major items of AUTOLINE equipment, and Siam-Hitachi Elevator will be responsible for manufacturing other equipment and for the installation work.

Don Muang airport, Bangkok's international airport, the main airport of the Kingdom of Thailand, is the world's tenth largest in terms of the number of international passengers, with about 29,000,000 a year. However, Don Muang airport is shared with the nation's Air Force and has site limitations with respect to enhancing the runway and the terminal, making it difficult to meet projected future airline demand.

Suvarnbhumi International Airport is being constructed in Nong Ngu Hao, Samut Prakan, about 30 kilometers from Bangkok. The new airport will be one of the world's largest international airports, with two runways, a state-of-the-art main terminal building and control tower on a site area of 3,200 hectares.

ITO-JV received the order for the construction of the passenger terminal complex of Suvarnbhumi International Airport from NBIA, and is moving forward with construction work on the terminal building and the concourse building. Siam-Hitachi Elevator received the order for the AUTOLINE from ITO-JV.

The order is for 74 of the 1600 series AUTOLINE (1,600 millimeters nominal effective width) and 33 of the 1200 series (1,200 millimeters nominal effective width). These AUTOLINE will be used in the concourse building. The total length of the 107 AUTOLINE is over 6,900 meters, and included four AUTOLINE with overall lengths of 108 meters.

Shipments of the AUTOLINE are scheduled to begin in April 2004, and completion will be done in November 2004. In the vast terminal and concourse buildings of Suvarnbhumi International Airport, AUTOLINE will provide the main horizontal movement, making a major contribution to ensuring the comfortable, convenient movement of people using the airport.

Hitachi and Siam-Hitachi Elevator have delivered a total of 112 elevators and escalators to Don Muang airport, and so they have considerable experience in Thailand. ITO-JV put a high value on Hitachi's and Siam-Hitachi Elevator's technology, quality, and maintenance service, leading to the decision to place this order with Hitachi and Siam-Hitachi Elevator. This is the largest order that Hitachi has received for its AUTOLINE business in Thailand.

Siam-Hitachi Elevator was established in 1991, with the Siam Motors Group investing 60% and the Hitachi Group investing 40%. Siam-Hitachi Elevator has the leading share elevator market in Thailand, and is continuing to increase its market share and expand its service system.
