Hitachi acquires "M/Chip 4 for MULTOS" payment application license from MasterCard
Tokyo, April 26, 2005 - Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501,NYSE:HIT) today announced that it has acquired a license from MasterCard International to supply the "M/Chip 4 for MULTOS" payment application as part of Hitachi's IC Card System Solutions.

By licensing "M/Chip 4 for MULTOS", Hitachi can now supply smart card vendors and issuers with a complete solution enabling the supply of MasterCard OneSMART™ Cards.

The solution package consists of:

"M/Chip 4 for MULTOS Customisation Utility", a flexible tool which allows vendors or issuers to configure the application for standard MasterCard Credit or Debit (in Dynamic Data Authentication (DDA) or Static Data Authentication (SDA) profiles), OneSMART™ Pre-Authorized, OneSMART™ Authenticate or OneSMART™ PayPass™, MasterCard's contactless payment solution.

A full range of MULTOS Platform - ranging from 8K to 36K memory (EEPROM), contact and dual interface

Key management services - for the enablement of MULTOS chips

Other value added applications

System integration

Financial institutions recognize not only the value of EMV smart cards to help reduce financial losses through decreased skimming and counterfeit fraud, but also the multiple opportunities to offer differentiated cardholder programmes by leveraging all of the strengths of the MULTOS operating system and its multi-application capability.

Hitachi, as a leading supplier of highly secure MULTOS based smart card platforms, will offer "M/Chip 4 for MULTOS" to MasterCard customer banks and expects to increase the sales of M/Chip 4 on MULTOS in South Korea and the wider Asian region where smart card issuance is widespread. In fiscal year 2005, Hitachi aims to supply its MULTOS solution package to at least five financial institutions in South Korea and Southeast Asia, and "SHINHAN card" is already planning to issue "M/Chip 4 for MULTOS" smart credit cards in October 2005.

"The decision by a global leader, such as Hitachi, to acquire a MasterCard license to supply the M/Chip 4 for MULTOS application will significantly increase the choice of products available to MasterCard customers as they migrate to EMV chip." said Ramin Aghdaee, Vice President, Chip Product Management at MasterCard International. "Hitachi's IC Card System Solutions offers financial institutions competitive, highly secure multi-application smart card solutions."
