There are high expectations for color plasma displays as the large-screen flat display of the future able to meet the demand for higher screen resolutions fueled by the increasing use of multimedia. CAD and graphics head a growing list of possible applications for color plasma displays that also include their use as system displays for public facilities and traffic information services and related monitoring and control purposes. Hitachi has therefore been working on the development of an XGA-compatible 25-inch color plasma display panel (PDP) that uses high-speed integrated-circuit drivers. Last year, the company exhibited a prototype at the Electronics Show' 96, and since then has made improvements in the contrast ratio and a number of other performance aspects.

The CMP250X-J's 25-inch screen size is large enough to display a full A3 size image, plus icons. XGA capability means a resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels, or 2.36 million on-screen dots, 2.5 times more than a VGA display (640 by 480 pixels). The panel is 11 cm deep, weighs around 19 kg, and has a wide viewing angle of 160 degrees, both vertically and horizontally. It incorporates multiscan technology that automatically adjusts to XGA, SVGA and VGA, and has video input ports.

Initially, the CMP250X-J will be targeted at industrial and professional users. For the future, 40-inch and larger wide-screen flat panel displays are being planned for the consumer TV market, where multimedia is becoming increasingly popular.

* As a member of the Hi-Vision PDP consortium, Hitachi has been participating in the development of fundamental PDP technology right from the beginning.

- Main features of the CMP250X-J -

1. Japan's first XGA color PDP
- A fine dot pitch of 0.165 mm and RGB pixel pitch of 0. 495 mm made it possible to realize XGA resolution (1, 024 by 768 pixels) in a 25-inch screen size.
- An optimized panel structure and electrode pattern give the panel a peak luminance of 100 cd/square meter.

2. Slim and light
The display is only 11 cm deep and weighs just 19 kg, including the power supply.

3. High contrast ratio
A contrast of better than 200:1 (under no ambient light conditions) results in sharp, brilliant colors.

4. Full A3 size image display capability
The 25-inch screen is large enough to display a full A3 size image, plus icons, which is ideal for CAD, graphics and presentation applications.

5. Wide-viewing angle
A viewing angle of 160 degrees both vertically and horizontally provides wide viewing clarity.

6. Multiscan
Hitachi developed special multiscanning circuitry that automatically senses and adjusts to XGA, SVGA and VGA inputs. It also supports video input.

* VGA and XGA are trademarks of International Business Machines Corporation of the US.
