Hitachi Announces World's Fastest Hard Disk Drive

- 3.5-inch drive for the OEM market -

Hitachi, Ltd. today announced the release of world's fastest 3.5-inch hard disk drive, the DK3E1T-91 series, with the speed of 12,030-rpm, that goes on sale on April 20.

In recent years, UNIX and Windows NT(R) server systems are being used to store and manage large amounts of information for enterprise processing, data warehousing and other such applications. The 3.5-inch drives used for such servers need to provide higher performance and improved reliability with low power consumption.

Previous 3.5-inch drives provided by Hitachi for server and workstation applications include the DK319H-18, which used an MR head to achieve a storage capacity of 18.2 GB, and the slim-form-factor DK329H-91 with a capacity of 9.1 GB.

The newly-announced DK3E1T-91 has the world's fastest drive speed of 12,030 rpm, and uses high-speed access technology to achieve an average seek time of 5 ms1. Newly developed signal processing technology boosts the data transfer rate to up to 27.3 MB/s2. In a transaction processing environment, the DK3E1T-91 provides an approximately 1.5-fold improvement compared to the DK329H-91. At the same time, at 11.8 W the drive 's power consumption is on a par with that of the earlier drives3, keeping heat generation down to the same level. This ensures high reliability. The new drive has a storage capacity of 9.2 GB and supports Ultra SCSI-2 and Fibre Channel interfaces.

1. Average seek time for reading data.
2. Internal data transfer rate.
3. Power consumption of previous models DK318H-91 and DK328-43 are 12.1 W and 8.5 W, respectively.
