Hitachi Releases 18-inch Wide-Viewing-Angle SuperTFT LCD

Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) today announced that it will release in Japan an 18-inch LCD
on January 12 as the latest addition to the company's SelecTop series of LCDs. The new
display employs Hitachi's SuperTFT LCD panel technology that delivers a wide viewing
angle as well as high resolution.
In personal computers, the main emphasis this year is on PCs that have sharp,
clear displays, are fast, and do not take up much space or consume much energy. This is
spurring the shift to LCDs which, compared to CRT displays, take up less space and
consume less electricity, in addition to which their low level of flicker makes it possible
to view them for extended periods without fatigue. In particular, there is a growing need
for LCDs having a large viewing area on a par with that of a 20-inch CRT display.
In response to this need, Hitachi is adding to its lineup this LCD which has a large
viewing area corresponding in size to a 20-inch CRT display and, with its SuperTFT
technology, is able to display small characters and moving pictures with razor-sharp clarity.
Hitachi, Ltd., headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, is one of the world's leading
global electronics companies, with fiscal 1997 (ended March 31, 1998) consolidated
sales of 8,417 billion yen($63.8 billion*). The company manufactures and markets a
wide range of products, including computers, semiconductors, consumer products and
power and industrial equipment. For more information on Hitachi, Ltd., please visit

* At an exchange rate of 132 yen to the dollar.

Features of the new display
1.	SuperTFT technology provides clarity and wide viewing angle
In accordance with Hitachi's SuperTFT technology, electrodes are used to apply
an electrical field that imparts a horizontal orientation to the liquid crystals, instead of the
vertical orientation used in conventional TFT panels. SuperTFT technology provides
displays that offer low flicker combined with fast response and low reflection, and are
able to display even small characters and moving images with very sharp clarity..
Moreover, a SuperTFT display has a wide vertical and horizontal viewing angle of 160
degrees (+/- 80 degrees).

2. SXGA compatibility
The display uses an 18-inch TFT liquid-crystal panel (equivalent to a 20-inch CRT
display) that is SXGA-compatible (1,280 by 1,024 dots) and is able to display 16.77
million colors. Because the display is low-flicker, it can be viewed for extended periods
without discomfort.

3.	Lightweight, space-saving design with low power consumption
At about 11 kg, the new display is only around one-third the weight of a 21-inch
CRT display, has about half the depth (233 mm) and uses about half the power (about 85
watts) (comparisons made with respect to Hitachi products).

4.	Analogue RGB interface offers full compatibility
The display unit is equipped with two D-Sub 15-pin analogue RGB interface
connectors, for connectability with Hitachi's FLORA 300/400/700 series of PCs as well
as with PCs and workstations made by other companies. Two PCs can be connected to
one display unit.*

*The display cannot simultaneously display images from two PCs.
