Carrier Ethernet

Information communication technology is absolutely essential for corporate activities and the social infrastructure. Within this trend, communication networks are playing an important role, with the result that the market for carrier Ethernet communication service will continue to grow to handle ever-increasing traffic.

Faced with this situation, network operators providing communication services must now offer competitive carrier Ethernet service. Hitachi's packet transport solution fills this need by

  • Meeting a broad range of corporate use requirements
  • Assuring carrier-class reliability
  • Enhancing network system operability

The AMN1700-series packet transport system uses MPLS-TP to provide point-to-point or mesh Ethernet services. Since it enables speed menu settings in accordance with the scale of operation of the individual corporate user and priority control in a packet-switched network based on the priority bit, this transport system supports the implementation of a carrier Ethernet service network supporting the variety of uses required by corporate users.

The AMN1700-series packet transport system also uses MPLS-TP to separate the route control section from the network equipment, enabling connection-oriented transport in an Ethernet network by static path provisioning from the EMS/NMS. Equipped with the OAM functions equivalent to SDH/ATM, the AMN1700-series packet transport system significantly enhances network operability and maintainability, while its fast path switching ensures carrier-class reliability. In addition, OAM in Ethernet makes possible the creation of a high-level SLA menu that was not available in the conventional Ethernet service.

Mobile Backhaul

In a few years, as mobile WiMAX and LTE spread, mobile broadband will be a normal part of the general public's work style. The fourth-generation mobile system features broadband and All-IP design. In addition, the mainstream transport layer of the backhaul connecting the wireless base stations and the core network will be Ethernet. Hitachi's packet transport solution strengthens the bandwidth control and reliability that mobile backhaul must provide.

The Hitachi AMN1700-series packet transport system supports a variety of OAM functions as requirements in a transport system, allowing network operators to create a very robust backhaul capability. These OAM functions include Connectivity Verification (CV), a Forward Defect Indicator (FDI), and a Backward Defect Indicator (BDI).

Furthermore, the AMN1700-series packet transport system supports not only Ethernet, but also ATM, SDH/SONET, and E1/T1* so that the transport system can accommodate multiple wireless systems (2G, 3G, WiMAX, LTE, and wireless LAN) on the mobile backhaul through circuit emulation. Aggregating backhaul facilities and improving transfer efficiency will yield benefits for the network operator.

Unified Transport Platform

Network operators have provided numerous communication services with each step of communication progress. Among these services are telephone switching service, leased lines, image transfer service, frame relay/cell relay, Internet provider service, IP-VPN, broadband LAN service and IP telephone service. Moreover, network operators must continue current services into the future.

Some communication service networks have their own transport systems because of differences in topology, core communication protocol, and communication quality grade and because of a requirement that a system failure should not affect other communication services. It is easy to see that if a transport system is necessary for each communication service, the number of operations personnel and facility costs skyrocket. The Hitachi AMN1700-series transport system helps contain rising personnel and facility costs.

The AMN1700-series transport system provides an environment that brings multiple communication services with different topologies and quality grades into a single transport platform by creating a virtual transport network for each communication service. Furthermore, it enables the network operator to integrate non-packet legacy services into the MPLS-TP network by using circuit emulation function supporting a number of protocols.

By simplifying the transport platform, network operators can reduce OPEX and CAPEX through facility aggregation and network operation integration while still continuing current communication services.
