Hitachi Research & Development

Hitachi

Greetings

Dr. Haruo TAKEDA
General Manager

Since its establishment in 1910, the Hitachi Group has expanded its business area from power and machinery to industrial systems, materials, electronics, and information and communication technologies. In order to support each area with the highest technological expertise, five corporate laboratories were established between 1934 and 1973. As the technology area became wider, expectations arose for creation of not only a collection of individual technologies but for greater value through synergy of those technologies.

The Advanced Research Laboratory (ARL) was established in 1985 in response to these expectations. To fulfill its mission, ARL defined two main research themes; the fundamental physics that rule the natural world and the human science that rules the social world. "Co-creation" is being actively pursued with top institutes around the world to produce new values, to promote the global growth of the Hitachi Group, and to contribute to the sustainable development of the human world.

Overview

General Information

ARL

The Advanced Research Laboratory was established in 1985 as the 6th corporate laboratory of Hitachi, Ltd., conducting research in Quantum Measurement, Software, Biotechnology and Material Sciences, with the aim of contributing to Japanese and international society in the 21st century.

Location

The main facility of ARL is located at the Hatoyama site, established in 1990, in the green countryside of Saitama prefecture, approximately 50km northwest of Tokyo Station.

ARL is located about a 20 minute drive away from Sakado Station on the Tobu Tojo line which runs north-west out of Ikebukuro Station, or alternatively, a 15 minute ride on the company shuttle bus from Takasaka Station further out on the same line.

Research

After its establishment, ARL has produced many research achievements which have had impact on the science and technology community, such as the work on electron holography and the observation of the quantum effect, development of optical topography and mind-brain sciences, etc.

From April 2003, ARL re-organized itself as the laboratory to conduct basic research to create paradigm shifts leading to new business, and fortified its resources to promote research in human & information systems, medical & bio systems, environment & energy systems and nano-technology. Each research theme is conducted at a location (within or outside the company, domestic or overseas) which provides the optimal research environment. Research cooperation with external organizations is also actively implemented to facilitate collaborative creativity.

Under the management of Dr. Takeda, approximately 100 researchers work in the 4 research centers of ARL: the Human Intelligence Laboratory, Bio& Medical Solutions Laboratory, and the NanoSystems Laboratory.

The research teams of Hitachi Fellows, Dr. TONOMURA Akira and Dr. KOIZUMI Hideaki, are also located at the main facility of ARL in Hatoyama.

The main facility of ARL is also the location of the Tokyo meeting of the International Symposium of International Symposium on Foundations of Quantum Mechanics in the Light of New Technology (ISQM-Tokyo).
