Explanation

Over the Air (OTA) is a technique for downloading content and other data and updating software in a wireless communications system.

Conventionally, software updates were conducted by connecting terminals with external media or communication cables. In contrast, OTA makes it possible to update software, without connecting terminals with cables, by using wireless LAN or mobile phone networks. By way of wireless communications, it allows remote updating.

Software updates through OTA has already been practically applied to smartphones and other mobile terminals as well as digital TVs and other "smart" home electronics products. Application is expanding to vehicles and other areas.
