The output from power sources such as photovoltaic cells and wind power generation varies with weather conditions, so the need for stable electric power supply limits their introduction. Hitachi is targeting both stable electric power supply and reduction of CO2 emission through development of new electric power system control technology.

With consideration given to the environment in recent years, there has been progress in introducing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power generation. The large-scale introduction of such energy sources requires solutions to the problems of voltage violations in power distribution lines due to reverse power flow, the voltage and frequency variations that come with fluctuation in power output, and the quality and reliability of the electric power.

Hitachi is moving forward with R & D on the supervisory control system and microgrid technology for the power distribution system that is needed to maintain quality. We are developing technology for optimum control of voltage control devices such as SVR and SVC using information on electric power systems and renewable energy source facilities and data on voltage and current etc. measured by sensors to estimate the state of the system and simulation techniques.
