— Presentation at ICE-B 2008 —
September 3, 2008
International Conference on e-Business (ICE-B 2008) was held in Porto, Portugal, during July 26 – 29, 2008. Though this conference’s area is e-Business, in the same place and time there are other three conferences whose areas are wireless networks and information systems, security and cryptography, signal processing and multimedia applications. The registrant of the one conference was allowed free access to all the conferences. In total there were over 250 presentations in all the four conferences.

From our Systems Development Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd., the three papers were presented. Among them, I presented the paper titled "A Feature Extracting Method for Tamper Detection in Printed Documents".
In general, there are the documents which are requested to be difficult to tamper and easy to find the fact of the tampering when they are tampered. The examples of those documents are certifications and securities. Previously, such documents are printed using the special paper of less commonly available to make the tampering difficult. However, because the special paper is generally rather expensive and requires extra effort to manage, there are needs to use the general paper for printing certifications or securities rather than the special paper. To meet this request, the method for detecting the tamper of the paper document is required. To detect the tamper of the paper document, we can extract the feature of the paper document and embed it into the paper document itself, and later we can compare the feature of the paper document and the feature embedded.

In our presentation, we introduced the new feature extracting method using the median point of the content of paper document. We showed our method has much potential to detect the tamper of paper document more sensitive and stable than existing method by experimental results.
We will improve our method as well as the feature embedding method, in order to put the tamper detection of the paper document to practical use.
