In today's climate of heightened threat of international terrorism, security measures when entering and leaving countries are being thoroughly reexamined. In the emerging ubiquitous information society, advanced digital personal authentication systems are indispensable for providing value-added services. Here we provide an overview of biometrics systems, a core technology in this development. More specifically, we outline the progress of Hitachi Systems Development Laboratory's Security Technology Research Center in developing a multimodal biometrics system for implementing a user-friendly yet secure authentication system that can provide a robust infrastructure for the ubiquitous information age.
