ABSTRACT

In step with the progress of our information-intensive society, the needs for high-speed and multimedia applications with desktop personal computers and workstations have increased in the corporate information systems environment.

These needs have also arisen with wide area networks, thus promoting a variety of programs geared towards the next-generation of high-speed and diversified communication networks.

In this environment, communication networks, an infrastructure of corporate information systems, require provisioning of products with functional and performance expandability that can accommodate changes flexibly.

To meet these needs, Hitachi, Ltd. provides multimedia integrated nodes for the following goals based on asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology to support corporate networks for the 21st century:

(1) Minimizing the communication cost, which is one of the basic user needs,

(2) Expandability by a high level of scalability,

(3) Compatibility with the existing environment in the evolution of ATM in the network infrastructure,

and (4) High reliability and a comfortable operating environment.
