The main requirements for portable information terminals are low power consumption, small size and high performance. Hitachi has developed the RISC engine series (SuperH) SH7702/08 (SH-3) for portable information terminals and multimedia terminals. This family includes a segment driver with frame memory, a liquid crystal display (LCD) driver chip set with a common driver, and a keyboard controller (IKAP) with a power management function.
The SH-3 incorporates high performance (60 MIPS/60 MHz) and low power consumption (600 mW max.) in one chip by using memory management.
Small, high-performance portable information terminals can be constructed using the SH-3, frame memory and the LCD driver chip set, which does not need an external LCD controller.
Hitachi will promote the high frequency version and peripheral module development for SH-3 units, according to requirements.
