Moving pictures and audio signals contain a large amount of information and thus exhibit a very high data rate. It is necessary to reduce this data rate in order to realize interactive multimedia systems.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) established the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) coding standard, ISO11172, which can be used to compress the data rate of moving pictures and the associated audio.

Using MPEG makes it possible to record a maximum of 74 minutes of video on a compact disc.

Hitachi, Ltd. is currently manufacturing several MPEG decoder LSIs, including the HD814103FE MPEG1 video decoder and the HD814102F MPEG1 audio decoder.

The HD814103FE uses horizontal and vertical interpolation filters, and is capable of reproducing high quality pictures. It also supports various display functions such as expand, shrink, and move.

The HD814102F supports MPEG1/Audio layers 1 and 2, and integrates internal memory to decode the audio signal, thus not requiring external memory.
