Continuous Annealing, Pickling and Galvanizing for Production of Surface-Treated Steel Sheet

ABSTRACT

In the field of surface-treated steel sheet products, demands are becoming more stringent for higher quality, and better productivity, in order to match specific product needs and increase operating efficiency. Two representative examples of such products are stainless steel sheet and hot-dip galvanized steel sheet. We have developed the Continuous Annealing and Pickling Line for Stainless Hot Coil (HOT AP-L), that enables the highly efficient production of a wide variety of steel grades. Additionally, we have developed the Continuous Galvanizing Line (CG-L), that makes it possible to automatically produce a diverse assortment of high-quality surface-treated products.

The HOT AP-L employs a new total control model to operate the annealing furnace, the scale breaker, and the pickling section under maximum efficiency conditions while accommodating the demands of a highly diverse product mix. Similarly, the CG-L features a completely automated line operation and high-reliability coating equipment to dependably produce high-quality products for such demanding applications as automotive panels. A HOT AP-L and CG-L were recently installed at the Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (POSCO), Korea.
