ABSTRACT

An object-oriented database management system (ODBMS) is a tool that allows easy handling of objects with complex structures, which are difficult to handle with a relational database management system (RDBMS). It permanently stores objects that are generated in an application program created using object-oriented programming.

The Hitachi Object Database (Hitachi ODB) offers high performance and advanced reliability features that are based on techniques and development know-how of the database/data communication (DB/DC) system of the mainframe, something Hitachi, Ltd. has produced for a long time. Incorporation of the application programming interface (API) specifications that the standards committee of an object- oriented database Object Database Management Group (ODMG) specifies corresponds to an open system in the Hitachi ODB. In addition, the Hitachi ODB supports the original universal relationship function that makes design and extension of data models easier than with the conventional C++ based model of existing ODBMSs.
