ABSTRACT

Recently, the progress of multimedia technology and the deployment of the Internet has enabled the electronic publishing business, "digital contents service" to challenge the more traditional publishing method. An abundance of information -not only the traditional character-letter and still-picture centered information- is provided to the subscriber as electronic digitized contents, including newly digitized sound, voice and video information. Moreover, through networks such as the Internet which target the unspecified consumer, an interactive information service is coming of age.

Hitachi Digital Heibonsha, Ltd. announced and is producing "Mypaedia 97," which is authored digitally from a small encyclopedia. We have carefully considered that, in the digital contents service, in addition to producing good quality contents, it is important to establish a database that enables multilateral and flexible queries. The methodology of these queries reflects firstly the consideration and conception of the editor ( in a similar manner to the editor of a book), and secondly the skills of computer engineers of the database design. The query method itself can be performed directly by the subscriber, especially via distribution services made available on the Internet.
