Optical-access technology, which is even faster than ADSL and cable-modem technologies, plays an important role in the evolution of broadband-access services. Accordingly, Hitachi has been undertaking research and development on optical-access systems since the 1980s and, recently, has developed several versions of such a system with a 1-Gbit/sclass data rate. The "AMN1220 GPON system" — based on the ITU-T G.984 standard — provides "triple-play" services incorporating existing telephony, analog video, and data including IP voice and video.
