Hitachi Universal Design Educational Program 2017
October 25, 2017
The Hitachi Universal Design Educational Program was held on October 25, 2017 at the Library Hall SMK Cochrane Kuala Lumpur. 48 Form 3 (third year of secondary education) students participated in this program.
At the beginning of the program, Hitachi's employee introduced Hitachi Group in Malaysia and presented the idea of Universal Design and why it is important. After the presentation, the students were organized into six groups for a group based activity. All teams were required to design a product that could help people who are visually impaired people and they were expected to redesign with their own creative ideas to make the product easy to use for everyone, regardless of age, gender, cultural background or physical condition.
During the group presentation, one team presented a robot that comes with Solar Energy panel, various types of sensor, speaker, GPS, which can help in leading visually impaired people being more independent. Another team came up with an idea of an easy to wear watch. It has a flexible watch strap, touch screen sensor, speaker, vibrator, which allow visually impaired people to know the accurate time by touching the screen. The presentation attracted many questions from the other group members.
We believe, through the above program, we are able to get the young generation to be more creative and think of Universal Design with user-friendly design features.
