Singapore, December 28, 2005 --- Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT / TSE:6501) today announced that Dr. Tsutomu Kanai, the Chairman Emeritus and former Chairman of the Board of Hitachi, Ltd., has been chosen to receive the Republic of Singapore's "Honorary Citizen Award". Established in 2003, this is the highest award conferred on foreigners by the Singaporean government in recognition of extensive and valuable services rendered to Singapore. Four key figures have received this award to date, Dr. Kanai being the first from Asia.

The privileges bestowed upon an Honorary Citizen, and his or her family, include the right to live, work and purchase a home in Singapore. Up to now, Dr. Kanai has promoted Hitachi's business growth in Singapore and, as a member of the Singapore Economic Development Board's International Advisory Council from January, 1995 to September, 1999, contributed to Singapore's economic development.

The Hitachi group has a history of over 30 years of relations with Singapore since launching its first business there in the early 1970's. Our 8,000 employees working in 38 locations in the country, including the headquarters of Hitachi Asia, are developing a wide range of businesses, including trains for the Sentosa monorail, escalators and elevators for Changi International Airport's terminals, hard disk drives, electronic components, consumer electronics, inspection systems, and research and development.

Comments by Dr. Kanai, Chairman Emeritus
