Hitachi Releases H-6592/6595 Disk Array Subsystem Links with Open Systems for Multi-platform Applications

Hitachi, Ltd. today announced that on May 12 it will release the H-6592/6595, a disk array subsystem of 3.5-inch drives each having a capacity of 9.2 gigabytes (GB), approximately double the capacity of existing drives, for a maximum subsystem capacity of 1.6 terabytes (TB). The H-6592/6595 is designed to work with mainframe computers as well as open system platforms such as UNIX and PC servers.

The growing use of the Internet and intranets and the utilization of groupware and data warehouses are all increasing the amounts of data that information systems are required to handle. To cope, corporations are turning to disk array subsystems that provide higher capacities and reliability. A further factor in the area of enterprise systems is the move toward using open systems in combination with mainstream business systems, making enterprises with multiple hardware platform requirements increasingly common. Companies with such an environment also want disk array subsystems with a comprehensive compatibility with the multiple platforms that encompasses maintenance and management as well as operation.

Hitachi started providing disk array subsystems for open system applications in 1993, and for mainframe computers in 1995. These products quickly established a reputation among customers for their high level of reliability, performance, and function. By including open system connectibility along with the mainframe computer system compatibility of its predecessor, the H-6591/6595, the H-6592/6595 provides an integrated solution to the disk array subsystem requirements of each of the platforms that reduces storage, maintenance, and management costs and operating overheads. A further advantage is that it enables high-speed data exchange between mainframes and open-system computers, something that formerly had to be done off-line using magnetic tape or via networks. The H-6592/6595 can also be used to back up mainframe tape libraries. When used with mainframes, the H-6592/6595 includes support for RAID level 1 as well as RAID level 5 support.

Note: H-6588-9 disk drive emulation and online data transfer functions will be available from the end of June 1997, and mainframe-open system data transfer facilities from the end of August 1997.
