Hitachi Releases E10A PCMCIA I/F Card Emulator for SH-4 Microprocessor

- 1/60 the size of previous Hitachi emulator provides real-time emulation at a 200 MHz -

Hitachi, Ltd.(NYSE:HIT) today announced the release of a PCMCIA I/F card emulator, the E10A series, for the SH-4, the most powerful of Hitachi's SuperHTM*1 RISC microprocessors. The E10A is 85.6 x 54 x 5 mm, 1 /60 the size of the previous Hitachi emulator, and is compatible with MicrosoftR Windows(R)95*2. The first product in this series is the E10A "HS7750KCM01H" for the SH7750 (SH-4), which is capable of 360 MIPS at an operating frequency of 200 MHz. It will be available from May, 1998 in Japan.

Hitachi already sells the sophisticated in-circuit emulators E7000 and E8000 which feature abundant support functions as high-end emulators for 16-bit and 32-bit CPUs, and the E6000, a low-end emulator for the H8 and H8S 16-bit CPUs.

The growing size of programs and the increasing number of program developers are generating a need for more emulators at lower prices. At the same time, users want smaller emulators that can be used for field evaluation during the development process. This led Hitachi to develop the E10A which, as a PCMCIA I/F dedicated card emulator, satisfies the requirements of compact size and low price.

The E10A for the SH7750 uses PCMCIA as the host I/F and is used via cable connection to the computer. The SH7750 incorporates the Hitachi-User Debug Interface (H-UDI) to communicate with the E10A. This ensures real-time emulation, which is difficult to achieve with the existing in-circuit emulator.

The Hitachi Debugging Interface (HDI) running under Microsoft(R) Windows(R)95 is provided as standard. This allows a mouse to be used for debugging, which is convenient for users who are not familiar with Hitachi tools. Measurement of module execution times and cache efficiency (hit rate) are among debugging performance functions that have been enhanced.

The trace function*3 can be used to obtain up to eight PC (Program Counter) values of branched execution of CPU instructions. The E10A also supports user interruptions in an emulator command wait state, which is difficult with the existing emulator.

The E10A can be used by computers with a PCMCIA type II slot, such as the including Hitachi FLORA PC. Thus, debugging is enabled using a notebook type PC, enabling the E10A to be used for field evaluations of user systems.

The E10A offers both user-friendly features and high cost performance and can effectively support software development of Hitachi's high-speed microcomputers. In the future, E10A support will be expanded to other high-speed microcomputers with built-in H-UDI.

  3. Trace function: A function for recording program traces executed by the CPU.

Features

  • Cost performance Low cost and compact size
  • Real-time emulation With an SH7750 installed in a user computers, the E10A can ensure real-time emulation up to the maximum operation frequency of the microcomputer.
  • High operating efficiency Users can debug programs with a mouse by using the debugger (HDI) running under a Microsoft Windows 95 environment
  • Easy field debugging Since it is a PCMCLA I/F dedicated card emulator, the E10A can be used with a notebook type PC, enabling users to debug programs in the field.
