Hitachi Releases 78MIPS SH-DSP with Built-in Large Capacity Single Power Supply Flash Memory
- Enables quicker development of high performance systems for consumer products, OA and industry -
Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) today announced the release of
     the "SH7065F", a 78 MIPS SH-DSP SuperH
TM*1
microcontroller, which contains a large capacity
(256k bytes) 3.3V single power supply flash memory.
Sample shipments will begin in August, 1998 in Japan.
Developed as a built-in processor in consumer products
and information, OA and industrial multimedia devices
such as car navigation systems and digital video cameras,
the SH7065F can execute most program instructions at the
highest processing speed, 78 MIPS, in one cycle, thereby
reducing the development period. To respond to a wide
range of user requirements, Hitachi also developed
the "SH7410F", by incorporating a 3.3V single power supply
flash memory of 48k bytes into the "SH7410" 78 MIPS SH-DSP.
Sample shipments will begin in August, 1998 in Japan.

To increase program sizes, reduce product development
periods, improve device specifications, and modify of
control data, microcontroller programs often need to
be rewritten or modified. In this current situation,
field programmability is required to readily enable
rewriting and adjustment of microcontroller programs
during the course of development, and sample production,
at the start of volume production and during mass
production of electronic devices with a built-in
     microcontroller. In response, Hitachi developed
     the "F-ZTAT
TM*2" microcontroller with built-in flash
memory and has already released 15 products including
     8- bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit versions. The new SH-DSP
products are for multimedia devices that need to
rapidly process a large volume of complex data (video
and audio data, for example) such as car navigation
systems and digital video cameras, and are also
intended for high-performance industrial devices such
as high-speed high-precision servo controllers. By
using a SH-DSP as the core, the products can rapidly
process large amounts of complex data in multimedia
     devices.

In addition to the 78 MIPS performance, the SH7065F
incorporates 3.3V single power supply large capacity
flash memory of 256k bytes. Most of the instructions
that require the highest processing speed in the systemcan
be stored in the built-in flash memory and executed in one
cycle. The SH7065F also incorporates abundant peripheral
functions including DMAC (direct memory access controller),
a powerful timer function, serial I/O, an A/D converter,
a D/A converter, and a direct connection function with
external memory (SRAM and DRAM (supports EDO)).This enables
performance enhancement anddownsizing of devices. In
addition, in the same way as for the existing F-ZTATTM
microcontroller, these products support collective erasing
and division of the flash memory into large/small blocks (12
divisions) and erasure of specific blocks. The latter
function is effective for adjustment of control data in
     application systems. The SH7410F has a built-in 3.3V single
power supply flash memory of 48k bytes, and can be used to
advantage in fields that require high-speed processing, such
as digital still cameras, by reducing development periods and
enabling specification changes to be flexibly implemented.

The SH7065F and SH7410F can be used with existing
development software. In terms of hardware, these
products can use the E8000 emulator and the SH7410F
can also use the E10 simple emulator. Looking to the
future, Hitachi is developing the SH7065M, which has
       a built-in mask ROM of 256 bytes.

    Supplementary information

     These products SH7065F and SH7410F use a 0.35 micrometers
aluminum 3-layer CMOS process and have a performance of
     78 MIPS at 3.3V operation using a SH-DSP with built-in
32-bit DSP as the CPU core, and therefore are suitable
for multimedia devices and high-performance industrial
     devices.

    Features

     SH7065F
     1. Large capacity single power supply flash memory.
In each of the processes of sample development,
production start, and mass production, microcontroller
programs and control data can be rewritten onboard. This
enables reduction of a development period and also
facilitates the handling of specification changes such as
version upgrading after delivery. Since a pressure-rise
circuit is incorporated in LSI, no separate power supply
(for instance 12V) for writing and erasing flash memory
data is required, thereby facilitating the designing of
the power supply of the device.

     2. Powerful peripheral functions
The SH7065F incorporates the following peripheral functions:
Direct connection function for DMAC and external memory
(SRAM/DRAM), motor management timer (MMT) that can output
6-phase non-overlapping wave forms for inverter driving
without program intervention, and serial interface (SCI)
with FIFO memory. This enables enhancement of system
functions and cost reduction and, therefore, the product
is most suitable for advanced performance industrial
devices such as motor control devices.

     SH7410F
     1. High-speed single power supply flash memory for
     DSP operation.
In each of the processes of sample development, production
start, and mass production, microcontroller programs
and control data can be rewritten onboard. This enables
reduction of a development period and also facilitates
the handling of specification changes such as version
upgrading after delivery. The SH7410F incorporates 48k-
byte X/Y flash memory byte for DSP operation and can read
data at 60MHz/1 cycle. Since a pressure-rise circuit
is incorporated in LSI, no separate power supply (for the
instance 12V) for writing and erasing flash memory data
is required, thereby facilitating the designing of power
     supply of the device.

     2. Powerful peripheral functions
The SH7410F incorporates the following peripheral
functions, enabling increased processing speed and
downsizing of emulators: Direct connection function
for DMAC and external memory (SRAM/DRAM), peripheral
functions such as UART and synchronous serial interface,
andserial debugging interface for handling the JTAG*
     interface standard

     Development environment

As the development environment of the SH7065F, the following
software and hardware products are made available.

Software: Cross C compiler, cross assembler, cross simulator,
               and debugger
     Hardware: Real time emulator (E8000)
