High-Efficiency Amorphous Motor Among Winners
at 2017 R&D 100 Awards

Tokyo, December 13, 2017 - Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501, "Hitachi") and Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Co., Ltd. (Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems) today announced that a high-efficiency amorphous motor they have jointly developed was one of the winners of the 2017 R&D 100 Awards sponsored by R&D Magazine in the United States. The award was granted in recognition of its innovation, distinctiveness and potential for technological development, which were valued as key components for creating a new market. The Awards ceremony was held at Walt Disney World Swan Resort (Orland, Florida, the United States) on November 17, 2017.

The R&D 100 Awards, which is sponsored by R&D Magazine in the United States, selects and commends the most outstanding 100 products and technologies from those which have been put to practical use over the previous one year among studies and research in the industrial and academic circles and those supported by government. With a history of granting the Awards based on the evaluation criteria including "technological superiority" since 1963, it is one of the world's most authoritative engineering awards.

High-efficiency amorphous motors are attracting attention as a technology that will increase the efficiency of electric equipment and curb energy consumption, reflecting increasing social interest in recent years in environmental issues such as global warming. In 2008, Hitachi and Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems developed the basic technology for an axial gap motor, which is able to increase the efficiency of motors, by employing amorphous magnetic metal in the motor core. In 2014, they developed the world's highest IE5*-class efficiency amorphous motor and launched sold air compressors on which this motor is mounted in 2017. As such, the application of the amorphous motor across a wide range of areas is expected. The Hitachi Group will continue to contribute to the development of science and technology and industrial progress through technological development.
