The Ocean ― To Make Use of This Ample Resource

Seawater covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface. We convert seawater into freshwater that we can use in our daily lives. This is the seawater desalination system.

“Seawater Desalination” Making Freshwater out of Seawater

Hitachi’s seawater desalination system adopts advanced technology for filtrating seawater by using membranes, and thus helps securing water resources not only for draught-prone areas but also for areas with water shortages due to population growth and industrial development.

Seawater contains not only salt content but also bacteria, viruses, and various other substances. The seawater desalination system converts seawater into freshwater that we can use by removing those substances.

Ultrafiltration(UF) Membrane System

UF membranes remove bacteria and other particles from seawater.

Salt and ions remain in the water from which particles (0.01 micrometer or larger in size) have been removed.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Membrane System

RO membranes remove salt and ions from UF membrane-treated water.

Freshwater nearly matching the quality level of drinking water comes through RO membranes that enable nano-level filtration.

Thus, seawater is converted into desalinated water. However, the seawater desalination system still poses an issue in terms of environmental impact. Hitachi’s Integrated Seawater Desalination and Sewage Reuse System (“Remix Water”) helps to resolving this issue.

The freshwater produced is used by factories in need of large amounts of water and for afforestation activities.

Needs for the water desalination systems will increase more and more in the future. Hitachi is trying to enhance the system’s practicability for promoting wider use in more parts of the world, while at the same time endeavoring to reduce its environmental burden.
