Great expectations are now being placed on wind power generation, which produces energy from “wind,” a common element so familiar to us. Hitachi is now addressing technology development toward putting this clean form of energy that generates no CO2 emissions into more widespread practical use.

How can we efficiently catch the fickle winds and supply energy stably? To answer this issue, Hitachi wind turbine system adopts the wide range of technologies.

Being sensible about the wind.

The downwind rotor system with the blades set on the downwind side of the tower is suitable for mountainous terrain where winds blow turbulently  or upward along slopes. The rotor can thus change direction like a weathercock. Therefore, in case of a storm and an accompanying power outage, for example, the rotor turns in the direction not subject to crosswind, so as to protect itself against damage.

Capability to read the winds

When the wind turns the blades (vanes), a generator converts the rotational energy into electrical energy. The nacelle contains, so to speak, the heart of a wind turbine system that features various technologies in addition to this important generator that produces electricity. And installed within the nacelle is Hitachi’s generator that precisely responds to changing airflow and thus ensures stable power generation by the system at all times.

Being strong but human-friendly in the wind.

Anybody who closely looks for the first time at a wind turbine generating system may be astonished by its huge size. The largest tower of a 2-MW wind turbine system is as tall as about 80 meters. When a blade becomes upright, the height of the system reaches that of a 30-story building. The burly blades of about 40 meters in length are elaborately designed not only to efficiently catch the wind but also to minimize the wind noise they cause.


IT amalgamated in harmony with nature.

How to stably supply power without being affected by the fickleness of the wind? To respond to this issue, Hitachi is endeavoring to apply IT in  its power control technology and system linkage stabilizing technology.

A new wind is blowing.

By fully utilizing the vast ocean that imposes less restriction in terms of landscape conservation and noise prevention than the land, the potential of wind turbine generation is being widely expanded. Hitachi is now conducting demonstration experiments on floating-type, offshore wind power generation, so as to encourage the introduction of a wider range of wind turbine installations.

Our challenge continues.

Constructing a wind turbine system offshore costs much more than building one on land. In search of more efficiency, the system is now being extended for the purpose of increasing the generating capacity of single units. Hitachi has developed a 5-MW offshore wind turbine system that can drastically increase output to 2.5 times that of a 2-MW unit.Hitachi will continue contributing to the development of offshore wind turbine systems.
