Development of a high resolution particle size distribution monitoring technology for powder including submicron particles

Realizing manufacturing process automation of ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and other products using powder materials

March 23, 2020

Hitachi has developed a high resolution particle size distribution monitoring technology for realizing the real-time control or the automation of the manufacturing process using powder materials. The developed technology separately detects each particle in the powder including submicron particles by analyzing the image of the small angle scattered light and the shadow’s shape of a particle(Fig.1). We confirmed that our developed technology could measure the peak separated particle size distribution of the mixed alumina*1 powder including powders whose mode diameters*2 are 0.2 µm, 0.4 µm, and 1.5 µm. This technology can monitor the time variation of the particle size distribution of the powder including fine particles which influences the product quality in ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and other products. Hitachi will aim to automate our technology for realizing the real time process control based on the monitored data, and contribute to the realization of the productivity maximized manufacturing process without skilled operators and trial and error.
