LED lighting means lighting fixtures that use LEDs as a light source.

Incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps convert energy to electromagnetic waves of a variety of wavelengths, and the energy that is not converted to light is wasted. With LEDs, in contrast, the energy spread matches the wavelength of light, and electric energy tends to be converted to light. As attention has been given to the energy saving performance of LEDs, which shine brightly with smaller electric power compared with incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps, LEDs are increasingly replacing those conventional lamps as home-use lighting fixtures.

LEDs also offer such merits as having longer use-life than incandescent lighting and fluorescent lighting so as to reduce the frequency of having to buy replacements, and attract fewer insects as LED light hardly includes any ultraviolet rays.

Furthermore, as LED emitted light has a strong tendency to travel straight, there are cases in which the light seems brighter directly below the equipment and darker in the surrounding areas depending on the lighting fixture. For this reason, development is underway for products that illuminate the entire room brightly by elaborating the overlaying covers of the LEDs in lighting fixtures.

In addition, although LEDs have been spreading to date as replacements for incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps, they are expected to provide new formats of lighting in the future, as they also feature high flexibility in color and shape.
