“Map of the Miura Coast made by everyone” is a new map made by the local residents and visitors to the Miura Coast through writing their “favorite way to spend time at the Miura Coast” on the map, so this map is full of special feelings and diverse perspectives of everyone.

Start facing the community in new daily life

In the past, Miurakaigan Station was just a station that only “efficiently” transport commuters to Yokohama and Tokyo on weekdays and tourists to the beach on holidays. However, under a new normal with COVID-19, we started exploring a new work style and a new way of spending vacations, such as telework and workation. The local residents in Miura City who commuted to Tokyo now have the opportunity to rediscover the tourism resources buried in the local area, while visitors, who are merely tourists, are increasingly likely to stay for a longer periods of time both for sightseeing and work. I believe that everyone is becoming more involved in the changes in the region and is also becoming able to foster the individuality of the region.

How can we create a public asset at the station that would create residents’ involvement?

A new public asset may be generated by aggregating the thoughts and ideas regarding the region sent from everyone into a large map placed in front of the station. Thus, “Map of the Miura Coast made by everyone” was born as a project. Through the discovery of new attractions of the region from the map that is updated day by day, the local residents and visitors are encouraged to get involved in the area and explore new ways of sightseeing unique to the Miura Coastal area. We aim to build a public asset that has great value for both individuals and the region by getting involved in something made by “everyone” rather than using an existing service.

Three features and three ways to re-connect among “Visitors”, “Local residents” and “Station”

Three features of the project

  • Participate in making the map, which is shared with many people, in your way: Choose a means (putting a photo, handwriting your comment, or using gestures) to show your favorite way of spending time at the Miura Coast.
  • Discover a new way of spending time at the Miura Coast that is not listed in any travel guide: This map of the Miura coastal area has many photos and messages full of special feelings and exciting experience on it. So, it is expected that you can meet a new discovery that is not listed in any travel guide.
  • Re-discover the attractions of the Miura Coastal area from inside and outside of the region: Both the local residents and visitors participate in making the map. Therefore, it can be expected that various attractions of the region would appear from both inside and outside of the region.

Three ways of participating in the project

1Post a photo

Print a sticker of a photo of the Miura coastal area (your favorite scenery or place you want to recommend) stored in your smart phone using the printer installed at the station, and post it on the map (iPhone only).

2Handwrite your message

Handwrite your message about your favorite way to spend time at the Miura coastal area or place you want to recommend on one of the balloon-shaped stickers that are placed near the wall, and post it on the map.

3Make a gesture

Make a gesture toward the sensor according to the instructions displayed on the monitor to send “Like!” to the map.

Voices from participants

This project was so exciting since many people participated one after another!

We anticipated that there would be a larger number of participants who came to the Miura Beach for sightseeing than participants of the local residents. In fact, however, there were overwhelmingly a larger number of participants of the local residents. The most impressive thing is that the local residents have a strong desire to show the attractions of the region to everyone.

And most importantly, it was amazing that many people participated in this project one after another. It seems that the more exciting the place is, the more people gather. One participant put a sticker describing his/her favorite place, and right next to the sticker, another participant put a sticker saying “No, this comment is not correct”. It is very nice that there is such a map in front of the station since the local residents can freely express their thoughts they want everyone to know.

At first, I thought that this project is like a “tourist information center created by everyone”, but I felt the movement that the local residents were sending the attractive information that would actively change the flow of the tourists. Some people even came to Miura City all the way from Yokosuka for this project.

Communication with people is possible without meeting each other

One colleague told me, “I went to Miura City and put a sticker”, and another said, “Many people are participating in the project!” There was great response to this project more than we had expected.

I think it was good that this map was placed in front of the station, and many spots I had not known appear. So, I think it would be great if this project could be carried out not only at Miura City but also at other railroad lines, such as Yokosuka, Hayama and Zushi.

The color of the stickers are divided between the local residents and visitors. So, I was so happy that I knew some visitors came to Miura City for sightseeing and put a sticker with a happy mood, while the local residents, who happened to pass by the station, noticed this map and put a sticker.

New discoveries in my town

There was a new discovery that people have different views. I have lived here all my life, so I only go to the places where I have things to do. Therefore, many other information does not come in, so I didn’t expect that interesting and useful information could be found on such a map. However, in fact, there are new discoveries in my town. It doesn’t matter if the local residents participate in the project for business or for volunteer activity. I think the important thing is a “way that is easy for the local people to participate in the project”. In this sense, the point of view that “everyone can make the map in various ways” is amazing.

In addition, I found out that children put many stickers saying various things, so I thought it would be good to actively involve them. The children can participate in this project since they can make the map while playing. They share information with their friends and then they may want to visit with their mother and father this weekend. This leads to the fact that more people will move around in Miura City.

Every time I used the station, I noticed the number of stickers was increasing

I talked with the master and workmates of this shop, “There is something in front of the station.” I heard that one of our customers put a sticker describing this shop, we were wondering which customer did it.

Unknowingly, some photos of this shop are posted to the map. I have lived here all my life, but there were a lot of new discoveries. Every time I used the station, I looked at the map out of the corner of my eye while thinking that something interesting is being held”.

It is very nice that the map is filled with useful information that visitors can make use of, including many recommended places that are also easy for the local residents to sympathize with.

How the region’s communication should be in the future

This project was carried out for three weeks. In a safe area like the Miura coastal area where mischief and accidents do not occur, sharing the ideas about the area at a public space like the front of the station is one of the ways of creating the foundation of wide and loose resident involvement.
In the future, the local residents share the thoughts and recognitions, and then public assets, which create “involvement” that makes us feel each other’s existence, will spread to other various cities and railway lines. We hope that, in this way, people in a wider area can be connected each other to enrich their lives.
