Manila, Philippines – Hitachi Asia Ltd. and its partners, Meralco Energy, Inc. (MSERV) and Toshiba Plant System & Services Corporation, Philippines (TPSC), have been elevating wastewater management standards at the Cupang Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) in Muntinlupa City for Maynilad Water Services, Inc. This project will enhance wastewater treatment capabilities and ensure compliance with the latest standards set under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order No. 2021-19 (DAO2021-19).

Ongoing works are focused on upgrading the wastewater treatment facility to integrate Hitachi’s advanced wastewater treatment technology. Once completed, the facility will have the capacity to process up to 46 million litres of wastewater per day, serving approximately 33,000 customers across Barangays Sucat, Buli, Cupang, and Bayanan in Muntinlupa City.

Powered by Hitachi’s cutting-edge PEGASUS (IFAS) technology, the upgraded Cupang Water Reclamation Facility will utilise advanced nitrifying pellets with immobilised microorganisms to ensure highly efficient nitrogen removal. Developed through Hitachi’s dedicated Research & development (R&D), PEGASUS delivers proven reliability and performance, enabling the facility to consistently meet the stringent effluent set under DAO2021-19.

“This collaboration reflects Maynilad’s continued efforts to build essential infrastructure that meets stringent environmental standards and supports community well-being,” said Ramoncito S. Fernandez, President and CEO of Maynilad Water Services, Inc. “Upgrading the Cupang WRF is part of our broader strategy to expand sewerage coverage in the West Zone while protecting public health and the environment.”

“Our work on the Cupang Water Reclamation Facility is a testament to Hitachi’s commitment to social innovation through sustainable and advanced technologies,” said Atsushi Kato, General Manager of Hitachi Asia Ltd. Philippine Branch. “Hitachi’s PEGASUS technology is designed to meet the stringent requirements of DAO 2021-19, ensuring that the treated effluent is safe for marine ecosystems and contributes to the protection of natural resources. Beyond regulatory compliance, this project enhances the quality of life for surrounding communities and embodies our vision of creating shared value by integrating innovation and environmental stewardship, driving a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.”
