35 Years of Christmas Joy with Hitachi

Nov 2025

From the very first Christmas arch in 1991 to the dazzling display we know today, each light tells a story, not just of Orchard Road’s transformation, but also of Hitachi’s steadfast commitment to Singapore’s community and growth.

For 35 years, Hitachi has been the main sponsor of the Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up, emphasising our long-standing commitment to give back to the community in a joyful and heartwarming way.

Beyond the iconic main welcome arch, a series of distinctive photo installations celebrating both Christmas and SG60 can be found along the stretch - each with a unique local twist. The public may strike a pose at the traditional trishaw led by reindeers, located in front of Shaw House Urban Plaza and look out for other charming displays such as the nostalgic Toa Payoh Dragon Playground.

Kicking off the celebration, the Christmas Light-Up ceremony on 8th November was graced by distinguished guests including Singapore President Thaman Shanmugaratnam, Minister of State for Social and Family Development and Home Affairs, Mr. Goh Pei Ming, representatives from the Community Chest, Orchard Road Business Association, and Singapore Tourism Board, along with Mr. Shinichi Sakai, Managing Director of Hitachi Asia.

Hitachi Ltd. Executive Chairman, Mr. Toshiaki Higashihara, made a special video appearance, reaffirming Hitachi’s commitment to continue working hand in hand with Singaporeans in key areas such as healthcare innovation, smart mobility, green energy, and AI data centres as well as expressing his well wishes for Singapore in celebration of SG60.

Adding to the festive experience and to take a trip down memory lane of more than three decades as the main sponsor, the Hitachi Santa House is one of the highlights at The Great Christmas Village, Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. The interior of the house features snapshots of welcome arches of yesteryears and “Hitachi Plays Santa” (HPS), our flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

One Hitachi, one shared purpose: Giving back to the community

At Hitachi, fostering community bonds and giving back to society have always been at the core of what we do.

On top of sponsoring the Christmas Light-Up for over three decades, Hitachi and its Group of Companies have continued with our annual tradition of giving back by donating SGD 220,000 as to the Community Chest. The funds will help support more than 300 critical social service programs, uplifing vulnerable groups across our local community, such as children with special needs, youths-at-risk, adults with disabilities, individuals facing mental health challenges, as well as seniors and families needing additional support.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participating companies and partners whose generosity made this contribution possible:

As an extension of the festive joy beyond Orchard Road, our flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Hitachi Plays Santa (HPS) begun with a simple mission: for all Hitachi employees in Singapore to collectively give back to society. Now in its 9th edition, HPS has returned with the theme “Light Up A Wish”. This year, the initiative brightened the lives of around 200 children and beneficiaries from the South Central Community Family Service Centre (SCCFSC) - including their siblings, transnational children and other centre beneficiaries - allowing us to share the excitement of the joyful season with everyone.

At SCCFC, the centre supports low-income families and empowers children from disadvantaged backgrounds with access to education, mentorship, and care.

Over two months, staff across Hitachi Group of Companies contributed in different ways to bring joy to the children, each playing a part in sharing hope and happiness. The curated gifts fulfilled close to 200 wishes from SCCFSC’s young beneficiaries, turning each wish into a joyful moment to remember. Every gift was chosen and given with care, showing the children that someone was thinking of them and celebrating their hopes and dreams.

During an internal workshop, colleagues also came together to build and pack three upcycled Christmas trees, each filled with small gifts such as stationery, mini toys, stickers, and snacks. These trees became a festive and sustainable symbol of the thoughtfulness, creativity, and warmth behind every gesture.

Altogether, the curated gifts, snacks and toys prepared for the children exceeded SGD 15,000 in value, and this was made possible by the heartfelt contributions of our staff.

The gifts and Christmas trees were presented to the children and their families during a special gift ceremony at the centre. To wrap up this year’s HPS program, our volunteers spent a joyful day with the beneficiaries at The Great Christmas Village at Shaw Urban House Plaza, ending with a classic Hippo bus ride to enjoy the dazzling Christmas lights up close.
