Pioneering grid innovation; Hitachi Energy and Statnett to deliver Norway's first eco-efficient transmission grid connection solution
- The project is Norway's first deployment of a transmission grid connection solution featuring SF₆-free EconiQ®, setting a new standard for sustainable energy infrastructure
Zurich, May 26, 2025 – Hitachi Energy announces today the signing of contracts with Statnett, the Norwegian power system operator, to deliver eco-efficient grid connection solutions in the greater Oslo area. These solutions will enhance the reliability and availability of electricity supply for domestic and business energy users in and around Norway's capital, while advancing the country's Net Zero goals. The collaboration underscores both companies' commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, while ensuring a more robust electrical grid.
The population of Oslo is expected to increase 33 percent to 1.6 million by 2030. Statnett's grid expansion and modernization project will help transport 60 percent more electricity to meet this growing demand and ensure the grid has a sustained, secure supply when the consumption is at its peak. Hitachi Energy will install two 420-kilovolt (kV) grid connection solutions with a compact footprint based on sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆)-free EconiQ®1 gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). This technology offers the highest efficiency while minimizing total life cycle costs and CO₂ footprint2.
"We are honored to collaborate with Statnett on this landmark project, combining our systems integration capabilities with pioneering technology to achieve their Net Zero goals and accelerate the energy transition," said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy's Business Unit Grid Integration. "Norway has long been a driving force in renewable energy, and now Statnett is setting even higher standards for sustainable energy infrastructure."
While Europe is leading the adoption of SF₆-free solutions driven by the commitment of utilities and regulators to climate action, Statnett has pioneered the deployment of SF₆-free GIS in Norway, in a significant milestone on its journey to Net Zero by 2050. Likewise, Hitachi Energy is committed to supporting the acceleration of the energy transition by taking a holistic approach to enhancing the sustainability of grid infrastructure. This includes deploying tools like EcoSpace™, which goes beyond traditional life cycle assessments by accounting for the environmental impact of material reduction and on-site activities in grid solutions.
Hitachi Energy and Statnett share a longstanding relationship built on trust and technological innovation. Over the years, Hitachi Energy has delivered critical infrastructure to Statnett, including advanced power quality solutions that underpin grid stability. This new collaboration further strengthens the shared vision for a sustainable energy future for all.
