A vision for sustainability is meaningless without action

Our Impact in Europe
Hitachi is taking action to reduce our environmental impact. Today, 78 sites across Europe operate using 100% renewable electricity, with a further 8 sites having achieved carbon neutrality. These milestones reflect our sustained commitment to lower carbon operations and sustainable business practices.
But our ambition goes beyond our own footprint. Working in close partnership with governments, cities, and customers, we apply our expertise in digital innovation, energy, mobility, and infrastructure to accelerate the transition to net zero.
Below are just some examples of how we are reducing emissions, improving efficiency and building resilience for the future.
Circular Economy
Recycled mineral oil, recovered and refined from used transformers, has been utilized as insulating oil for distribution transformers and most recently also successfully tested and technically validated for power transformers.
Substituting virgin mineral oil with recycled mineral oil can typically reduce the material-related carbon footprint of transformers by up to 8%, and allows the average recycled content at transformer level to increase by approximately 20%.
Future of UK rail travel
Hitachi has partnered with Angel Trains and TransPennine Express to conduct the UK's first intercity battery trial. The tri-mode technology which allows trains to be powered by electricity, battery or diesel saw emissions and fuel costs cut by around 30%.
Following the trial's success, Hitachi delivered 45 rail cars, supporting more cost-effective operations, and a more sustainable public transport industry.
Grids of the future
Hitachi launched HMAX Energy, a suite of AI-powered services and solutions designed to safeguard critical energy infrastructure while meeting increased energy demand.
HMAX Energy optimizes planning, prediction and prevention to strengthen energy security and resilience. It helps extend asset life by enabling early issue detection, customer cases have shown a 50% reduction in transformer failures.
