Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy announces supply of key reactor components for OPG's Darlington New Nuclear Project

Tokyo, May 9, 2025 Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd. ("Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy") *1, a joint venture between Hitachi, Ltd. and GE Vernova, announces its role in supplying key reactor components for the first unit of Ontario Power Generation("OPG")'s Darlington New Nuclear Project ("DNNP") under its nuclear alliance partner, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
The DNNP marks a significant milestone as it is the first Small Modular Reactor ("SMR") project in North America, and OPG has officially announced the commencement of construction for the BWRX-300 on May 8, 2025. The BWRX-300 is a state-of-the-art SMR developed collaboratively by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, designed to achieve high economic efficiency while enhancing safety. Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy has been actively involved in the design process of this innovative reactor.

On June 1, 2025, the company will change its company name to Hitachi GE Vernova Nuclear Energy, Ltd.

In addition to its involvement in the design, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy will supply critical components for the first unit of DNNP, including Reactor Internals, Fine Motion Control Rod Drives ("FMCRD"), and Hydraulic Control Units ("HCU"). These components are essential for the reactor's functionality and safety, and Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy has a proven track record of delivering these components to numerous ABWR/BWR reactors.

For the first unit, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy will collaborate with experienced domestic supply chains in Japan to ensure the delivery of reliable equipment. For subsequent units, in addition to existing experienced suppliers, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy plans to leverage Canadian supply chains to maintain reliability while promoting localization and further economic efficiency.

Moving forward, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy will continue to contribute to the success of the DNNP by utilizing its extensive knowledge and experience in BWR technology and will leverage the experience gained from DNNP to grow its business by capturing the growing demand for SMR in partnership with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
