Alistair Dormer, former Executive Vice President and Executive Officer of Hitachi, receives the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star

Tokyo, November 3, 2025 - Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501, “Hitachi”) today announced that Alistair Dormer, former Executive Vice President and Executive Officer of Hitachi, has been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star in the Autumn 2025 Decorations. This honor recognizes his outstanding contributions to strengthening economic relations between Japan and Europe, particularly the UK, and development of Japan's technological capabilities.

Dormer joined Hitachi Europe Ltd. in 2003 and led the development of Hitachi's global railway business in Europe for nearly two decades. In 2005, Hitachi became the first Japanese railway manufacturer to secure a contract for the production and maintenance of high-speed trains in the UK, marking a pivotal moment where Japanese railway technology gained recognition in Europe. In 2012, Hitachi secured an order from the UK Department for Transport to manufacture and maintain 866 rolling stock units for the UK's largest intercity high-speed railway project. As part of this initiative, Hitachi established a factory in Newton Aycliffe, UK, contributing to the development of the British railway industry through job creation, technology transfer, and joint development. This factory served as a successful case study of Japanese corporate investment, attracting visits from Japanese and British leaders as well as UK government ministers, thereby deepening Japan-UK relations.

Dormer led Hitachi's major investments in the European railway industry, including the acquisition of AnsaldoBreda and Ansaldo STS in Italy in 2015, and the railway signaling business of Thales in France in 2024. As railways gain attention as a means of transportation that contributes to building a decarbonized society, he led business development that integrates Japanese and European technological capabilities. In addition, at COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021, Hitachi became the only Japanese company to serve as a Principal Partner, and Dormer, as Hitachi's Chief Environmental Officer, represented the Hitachi Group and showcased Japan's environmental technologies and responsible corporate stance to the world.

Furthermore, for two years from June 2022, Dormer served as President of the Japan Business Council in Europe (JBCE), an association of Japanese companies in Europe which acts as a bridge between Japanese companies and the EU, contributing to EU policy formation and the development of an attractive business environment for both Japan and Europe. In particular, at the 25th annual meeting of the EU-Japan Business Round Table held in Brussels, Belgium in November 2023, as President of the JBCE, Dormer presented the views and requests of Japanese industry on topics such as economic security/supply chains, the green transition, and standardization/regulatory harmonization. His remarks were reflected in the final recommendations to the Japan-EU leaders.

Comment from Alistair Dormer

“It is a great honor to have been selected to receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, and I am truly humbled by this prestigious recognition. Throughout my career, I have believed in the importance of integrating the respective strengths of Japan and Europe. With a particular focus on the railway sector, I have dedicated myself to advancing business initiatives across Europe. This award is the result of tremendous support from stakeholders in Japan and Europe, for which I express my deepest gratitude. I hope for the continued advancement of Japan's technological capabilities through deepening relationships with other nations.”
