On October 1, 2004 Hitachi, Ltd. established the Hitachi Incident Response Team (HIRT) center. The chief purpose of the center is to promote rapid, widespread dissemination of vulnerability mitigating information throughout the company by centralizing the distribution of security incident reports. We envision extensive sales of consumer-oriented digital devices and all sorts of other products continuing not only Hitachi-developed software but software developed by any number of other software development vendors. Clearly, a much more extensive range of vulnerability mitigating information will be required even within the company. Hitachi is already taking proactive steps in anticipation of these needs.

Various other companies will be taking similar steps in the years ahead. This is another reason that the efficient dissemination of vulnerability mitigating information by JVN will become increasingly important as time goes on. If this manner of information sharing becomes commonplace, this will substantially alleviate the burden on all the individual product vendors and users, which will help bring down the security costs not only for companies and organizations but for society as a whole. While JVN activities are just getting started, we would encourage the widest possible participation considering the anticipated benefits that will be enjoyed by all. Thank you for your support.
