Head of Hitachi OSPO becomes a member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation Governing Board

Contributing to Community Revitalization by Strengthening Global OSS Activities through Linux Foundation EU Chapter, etc.

Yuichi Nakamura with Hitachi, Ltd. ("Hitachi"), Head of OSPO (Open Source Program Office) has been appointed to the Governing Board (Board) of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) *1, a non-profit organization that leads the global development and promotion of cloud-native technologies such as containers and microservices. In electing him to the Board, the Foundation recognized his commitment to promoting CNCF in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region and his collaboration with other LF organizations, making him the first Japanese company to be elected to the Board*2. He will participate in the KubeCon CloudNativeCon Europe 2025 conference to be held in the UK in April, where he is scheduled to speak about the activities of the CNCF Japan Chapter and other topics.
In addition to the CNCF, through LF Europe, the EU chapter of the Linux Foundation (LF) and the TODO Group*3, which Hitachi joined in January, Hitachi will strengthen global OSS activities and contribute to community revitalization by solving social issues using cloud-native technologies and further penetrating the global OSS ecosystem through the deployment of Hitachi OSPO's know-how.

On the occasion of this appointment, Nakamura said, "As an evangelist of LF board, I have been pursuing compatibility and collaboration between OSS community activities and business applications. Specifically, I have been involved in promoting OSS in Japan by acting as a bridge between the domestic community and related global organizations such as CNCF, and by establishing Cloud Native Community Japan and FinOps Foundation Japan Chapter. As a new CNCF Board member, I look forward to promoting CNCF activities in Japan and the Asia Pacific region, expanding collaboration with other LF affiliates, and helping to make KubeCon Japan, to be held for the first time in June, successful as a member of the Board."

Role of the CNCF Board

  • Approving the CNCF budget, directing the use of funds to advance the mission of the CNCF;
  • Defining and enforcing policy regarding intellectual property (copyright patent, or trademark) of the foundation;
  • Directing marketing and evangelism efforts;
  • Providing financial governance overall;
  • Voting on other decisions that come before the Governing Board.

Biography on Yuichi Nakamura, who was appointed to the CNCF Board

PhD with Engineering, Chief OSS Strategist, OSS Solution Center, Hitachi, Ltd.

  • 2001-: Involved in research and development of OSS security and since then, especially leading the SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux) promotion activities in Japan, providing a large number of codes to the community.
  • 2015: Received the Kiyasu Memorial Achievement Award from the Information Processing Society of Japan for OSS development activities related to SELinux, along with other OSS security community members.
  • Launched API management solution using OSS Keycloak and trained maintainers.
  • 2022: Appointed as a board member of LF
  • 2023: Participated in the establishment of Cloud Native Community Japan, the Japan Chapter of CNCF
  • 2024: Appointed as the first evangelists of Linux Foundation Japan
  • 2024: Established Hitachi OSPO and became the first Head of OSPO
