Calculation methods for environmental load data

Hitachi collects Group-wide environmental load data using the Environmental Data Collection System called ESG Management Support Services (ESG-MSS).
The standards, guidelines, etc. below are used for determining the scope, base year data, calculation methods, etc.

Environmental Information ItemStandards, Guidelines, etc.
Energy
  • ISO 14064-1, which is based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) developed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development
  • Manual for Calculating and Reporting Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Ver. 4.8 (Ministry of the Environment, Japan)
Waste
  • Japan's Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law
VOCs and other chemical substances
  • Japan's Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTR) Law
Water
  • GRI303: Water and Wastewater (2018)

Water measurement method

 Method of measurement
Total water intakeTotal water intake is monitored at each business site at a frequency of at least once a day, at least once a month, at least once every other month, or at least twice a year.
In addition to flow meter measurements, total water intake is calculated by multiplying facility capacity (pumps, etc.) by operating time, or by billing for water consumption.
Total dischargeThe total amount of wastewater is monitored at each business site at a frequency of at least once a day, at least once a month, at least once every other month, or at least twice a year.
The total amount of wastewater is calculated using either a flowmeter measurement or a calculation value that is calculated by multiplying the facility capacity (pumps, etc.) by the operating time.
Total consumptionTotal consumption is calculated using the same method as for total water intake and total consumption. However, if direct measurement is not possible, water consumption is calculated using GRI303 (Water and Wastewater) as follows: Total water intake - Total wastewater.

Scope of negative impact calculations

Hitachi perceives its negative impact activities as including the emission of greenhouse gases and chemical substances into the atmosphere and the generation of waste materials. By quantifying such impact using LIME2*1, Hitachi is advancing initiatives to reduce its negative impact.
