[Image] Making our hot datacenter into a cooler place

Eco-friendly Datacenter Project seeks to use the combined power of the Hitachi Group to make comprehensive power savings for datacenters, encompassing IT equipment, air conditioners, power supply facilities and the buildings themselves. Our goal is to reduce the power consumption of a datacenter by up to 50% of FY2007 levels by FY2012.

What are datacenters?

Datacenters might at first resemble a video game arcade, with their rows and rows of computers. But the resemblance ends there.
Datacenters are designed to hold large numbers of servers, storage devices and other IT equipment, with the intention of allowing information systems to operate safely and consistently. Care is taken to ensure that their information systems can still operate without failing even in case of accidents or suchlike occurring, by extensively using power generators, power supply sources and air conditioning.

[Image] Ever-increasing power usage - Reducing power usage by IT equipment and air conditioners is a major issue!

Information systems play a vital role in the management of corporations. As a result, the number of corporations requiring datacenters is constantly on the rise.
But as the number of pieces of IT equipment in datacenters increases, power consumption is rapidly increasing. Power usage of air conditioners is also so great to cool IT equipment. A closer look at the breakdown of power consumption inside datacenters shows that IT equipment and air conditioning take up the majority of power used. This means that reducing datacenter power consumption is also a prime way of lowering CO2 emissions.

Heavily reducing CO2 emissions through power saving!

The Hitachi Group has launched the Eco-friendly Datacenter Project. The key feature is its comprehensive approach to making power savings in every aspect of datacenters, from IT equipment to air conditioning and lighting. The datacenter building itself may even be refitted to enable further power savings.
This full-scale approach aims to reduce datacenters' overall power consumption to up to 50% of their FY2007 level by FY2012.
